Old Age.

“Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.” – Coco Chanel

With old age, patients generally encounter a higher frequency of illnesses. Eyes aren’t an exception unfortunately.

The major cause of vision loss in the elderly population in the United Kingdom is due to Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD). Roughly 25,000 people loose their vision in the United Kingdom as a result of ARMD.
There are two types:

  • Dry ARMD – an untreatable condition and affects the macula of the eye. This is detectable by our senior optician using the equipment that is present in the practice.
  • Wet ARMD – a treatable condition in 10% of the ARMD patients however this needs to be diagnosed at its early stages and patients must be referred immediately to a hospital.

Patients will encounter a sudden change in the vision or may find their vision to be distorted.
